Geopark expansion proposals

Following a recommendation made by UNESCO in 2022, Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) is currently considering a formal extension to its southern boundary where it fringes on the South Wales Coalfield.

We have been invited to ‘consider expanding the UGGp territory to include new sites related to the impressive mining heritage‘.

The Geopark has worked with communities on its southern fringe for many years; this is an opportunity to strengthen that collaboration. We have started to examine which areas might benefit from being brought into the Geopark – the rules allow for a 10% expansion on our current area – that would mean up to 76 square km of new territory.

It is important that any changes have the support of local communities; that’s why we will be consulting with organisations and individuals over the coming months – we want to hear what they think. An initial consultation is currently ongoing within the Neath Port Talbot county borough sector with assistance from Planning Solutions Consulting.
