(539 – 485 million years ago)
No rocks of this age are known to be exposed at the surface within Fforest Fawr Geopark though they may exist at great depth.
The nearest exposures of Cambrian rocks are in Pembrokeshire, at places in south Shropshire and within the Malvern Hills some 50 miles to the east of here.
What’s in a name?
The period is named after ‘Cambria’ – the classical name for Wales where indeed rocks of this age were first studied in detail.
